Yoshitaka Amano (天野喜孝, b. 1952, Shizuoka, Japan) is one of the world’s most celebrated Japanese artists, renowned for his ethereal paintings, iconic character designs, and cross-cultural collaborations. Beginning his career at Tatsunoko Productions in the late 1960s, he became known for creating characters such as Gatchaman and Casshan. In the 1980s he established himself as an independent illustrator, working on bestselling novels like Vampire Hunter D and The Guin Saga, and later gained global recognition as the visual mastermind behind the Final Fantasy series. His work blends Japanese woodblock aesthetics, Art Nouveau, and Western comics, creating a unique visual language admired across the globe.
In addition to his work in animation, video games, and publishing, Amano has exhibited as a fine artist in major cities including New York, Paris, Milan, and Tokyo. His collaborations range from Neil Gaiman (Sandman: The Dream Hunters) to DC Comics (Batman), as well as high-profile projects with fashion and music. Constantly reinventing himself, Amano continues to expand the boundaries of fantasy art, and his recent focus on large-scale works such as his Greek Mythology series makes his appearance at AthensCon 2025 especially meaningful.
